Prime Minister Garry Conille returned to the country this Saturday, after his official trip to the United States that lasted a week. Upon his return to Port-au-Prince, the Head of Government Dr. Conille met the press at the diplomatic lounge of the airport, to present the results of his tour to the United States.
From the outset, the Prime Minister expressed his sympathies to the families of the two divisional inspectors of the national police who were assassinated last week in the commune of Carrefour. He gave the guarantee that his government will take all necessary measures to put an end to these regrettable acts.
On the other hand, he explained that the success of the transition depends on 4 aspects: namely the commitment of the population, a reorganization of the institutions, which are extremely fragile, the participation of the Haitian diaspora and finally the way in which the international community intends to support the country.
Dr. Conille noted that official development assistance has decreased considerably in recent years. The projects presented by Haiti are often disjointed and do not take into account reality. He specified that he wanted through his trip to send clear signals to the international community by explaining to them that there is a new leadership currently in Haiti.
Garry Conille said he had very fruitful discussions with international financial institutions. He indicated that he is not yet satisfied with the way donors are beginning to disburse funds to Haiti, indicating that international financial institutions are ready to review their portfolios, based on the new priorities defined in the April 3 agreement.
Thanks to his trip, Haiti was able to recover $40 million from the IDB. An amount that the country was going to lose. Dr. Conille said that he is back with a sense of duty accomplished, since donors are going to recommit to Haiti.
The Prime Minister said that he also had discussions with the US State Department about cooperation. In terms of support, the American authorities recognize that there is an emergency in Haiti and promise to move quickly and well.
The Prime Minister met with members of the UN Security Council, as well as representatives of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). He took advantage of these meetings to explain the opportunities offered by the April 3 agreement, which allowed the various Haitian political parties, often at loggerheads, to unite around a common vision. The Head of Government announced that some countries that had evacuated their diplomatic personnel are preparing to return to Haiti.
During his visit to Miami, Dr. Conille met with American elected officials of Haitian origin as well as members of the Haitian diaspora, with whom he discussed in particular how they will become concretely involved in the success of this transition.
