After months of interruption caused by the political and social unrest shaking the country, students in the metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince are timidly returning to school this week.

Since the start of the year, Haitian schools have been hit hard by protests, strikes and civil unrest, leading to the closure of many establishments and disrupting the school calendar. However, over the past few days, students have been observed in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, some sporting their uniforms while others are in civilian attire.

In a press release published on May 6, 2024, the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training expressed its satisfaction with this gradual resumption of school activities in Port-au-Prince. The ministry also announced the continuation of the targeted learning compensation system, aimed at supporting the students most affected by interruptions.

“In addition to classroom learning, the MENFP will use video capsules, radio, web radio and television broadcasts, its digital resources platform and other platforms from partner institutions for the success of these courses “, the ministry said in its press release.

On April 8, 2024, UNICEF reported that as of the end of January, more than 900 schools had been temporarily closed due to ongoing instability and insecurity. For the moment, no data on the number of schools closed due to insecurity until the end of April is available.

Schools have been forced to suspend activities due to daily clashes between police and gangs, which have transformed some places intended for children into battlefields.

In March, violence forced around 362,000 people to flee their homes and seek refuge, including in some schools where classrooms were set up to temporarily accommodate displaced families, and tents were set up on school grounds. children’s game.
