In Port-au-Prince, as in certain provincial towns, the Guédés festival has lost its meaning and its essence. A significant event taking place on November 1 and 2, All Souls’ Day couldn’t be duller this year (2024).
The large cemetery in the capital where the celebrations were held was empty. The lower part of the city is controlled by armed gangs. Haiti is a country where even the dead do not rest in peace. So, the mythical and symbolic dates are suddenly flouted.
The Feast of the Guédés a traditional practice, a cultural value in danger of disappearing. What’s worse, the so-called authorities are doing nothing to give the country the necessary hope, the strength to believe that tomorrow will be better than today.
