P-to-P, February 6, 2024 [AlterPresse] — At least two people killed and several others injured were reported in Sapotille in the commune of Carrefour (south of the capital, Port-au-Prince), during attacks by armed bandits based in Mariani, on Monday February 5 2024, according to testimonies collected by AlterPresse.

Several families residing in Sapotille were forced to abandon their homes to take refuge with relatives or elsewhere, during armed attacks by these bandits, who were trying to expand their area of influence.

For several days, heavy gunfire has continued to ring out in the municipality of Carrefour.

Since Monday, February 5, 2024, the situation remains tense in the commune of Carrefour and in Mariani, where the Haitian National Police (PNH) is still present without carrying out real interventions against armed gangs.

In a note, the Pnh had promised to continue its operations, started in Mariani since January 1, 2024, “in order to apprehend all the thugs, who would always tend to create panic within the population”.

On the night of Tuesday January 23, 2024, armed bandits from Ti Bwa had trespassed on the campus of the Adventist University of Haiti (Unah) in Diquini.

Before leaving, they allegedly threatened the security agents with reprisals, in case they decided to allow the Pnh to use the said campus as a passage to attack them.

Armed clashes, which broke out since Friday January 19, 2024, between Pnh agents and armed gangs, caused a paralysis of activities for several days.

On Monday January 22, 2024, most schools did not operate in Carrefour, due to armed violence.

Hundreds of people returned to the streets on Monday January 15, 2024, in the town of Carrefour, to continue to demand the resignation of de facto Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, in power since July 20, 2021. [emb rc apr 06/02/2024 10:00]
