P-au-P., April 3, 2024 [AlterPresse] — The benefit of urgency now seems to be the rule for taking the steps favoring the entry on the scene of the Presidential Transitional Council, AlterPresse learns from consistent sources linked to the process.

The President of the Council could probably be known shortly. Previously, it was decided that the election of the president would be held after the installation of the Council. It is not known whether this decision still stands.

The Presidential Council includes the following voting members Leslie Voltaire designated by the Fanmi Lavalas Political Organization, Emmanuel Vertilaire designated by the Pitit Dessalin Party, Edgard Leblanc fils designated by the Collective of Political Parties of January 30, 2023, Fritz Alphonse Jean designated by the Agreement of August 30, 2021 known as the Montana Agreement, Smith Augustin designated by the Democratic Resistance Platform (RED/EDE) and the political group Compromis historique, Louis Gérald Gilles designated by the Agreement of December 21, 2022 and Laurent St Cyr representing the employers’ associations and groups of Haitian businessmen and women.

The two non-voting members (observers) are Régine Abraham, from Rassemblement pour une Entente Nationale (REN) / Inter-Foi and Frinel Joseph, from the Civil Society Group.

Following a Council of Ministers which was scheduled for the afternoon of Wednesday April 3, the decree formalizing the creation of the Council was expected shortly, according to the sources contacted.

A political agreement has been reached between the 7 sectors represented in the Presidential Transitional Council and the document is now available.

The political agreement drawn up and the decree creating the Presidential Transitional Council should constitute the reference documents for the next transition.

They are part of what the outgoing de facto government presented as prerequisites for the formalization and transfer of powers to the Presidential Council, in a context of persistent unrest caused by the daily actions of gangs. The latter tighten their grip on the capital where they terrorize the populations, kill and destroy numerous properties.

International pressure has reportedly increased to advance the transition process.

The de facto authorities promised, Monday, April 1, to the American ambassador in Port-au-Prince, Dennis Bruce Hankins, to quickly conclude the procedures for the transfer of powers to the Presidential Council. [apr 03/04/2024 20:00]
