Haiti-Dominican Republic: An alarming migration situation

No improvement in the living conditions of Haitian citizens in an irregular situation in the Dominican Republic has been noted. According to a monthly report published by the Support Group for Returnees and Refugees (GARR) this Tuesday, June 25, 2024, 27,679 Haitian migrants were repatriated from the neighboring republic during the month of May 2024.

GARR also recorded 33,602 voluntary returns and 6,841 pushbacks, showing that women and children were not spared from the pressures of Dominican immigration agents.

Despite the difficult conditions, Haitians continue to cross the Dominican border in search of better well-being. No decision has been taken in consultation with the Haitian authorities to prevent this migratory flow and redouble efforts to regularize the situation of Haitian nationals in the Dominican Republic.

GARR emphasizes that many Haitians live in hiding to avoid arrests by migration authorities. The Dominican Republic continues to repatriate Haitians, ignoring calls for international solidarity towards Haiti, with more than 35,000 repatriations recorded in April 2024 and 26,916 in January 2023.
