Haiti – FLASH: Hurricane BERLY Category 5, Haiti on Yellow Alert
02/07/2024 05:04:23

The Hydrometeological Unit of Haiti (UMH) has launched the yellow alert level in the face of the threat of Hurricane Beryl which has already hit several Caribbean islands.

Hurricane BERYL continues its path towards the southeastern Caribbean islands. According to the latest forecast, BERYL can bring many hazards such as rain, strong winds and swell on the South, South-East and Grand’Anse departments from this Tuesday to Wednesday July 3.

The Hydrometeorological Unit has therefore declared the yellow alert level on the country in the face of the threat of floods, heavy rains and strong winds that may be generated. The National System for Risk and Disaster Management asks the population to continue to follow weather reports and follow the advice of the authorities.

Due to the turbulent sea conditions, the Hydrometeorological Unit in collaboration with Semanah and Civil Protection announced the ban on all cabotage activity on the southern coast of the country.

This is why all boat operators are asked to avoid setting sail from Tuesday evening until Wednesday 3 July.

Hurricane Beryl this Tuesday at 5am:

As of 5:00 AM Tuesday morning, the eye of Hurricane Beryl was located near latitude 14.6 North and longitude 66.9 West. That is 400 miles (645 km) southeast of Haiti. Beryl is moving toward the west-northwest at near 22 mph (35 km/h) and is expected to continue moving rapidly toward the west-northwest over the next few days and turn westward by Thursday. The center of Beryl is forecast to move rapidly today across the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea and is expected to pass near Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands on Thursday.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 165 mph (270 km/h) with higher gusts. Beryl is a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Weakening is expected to begin later today, but Beryl is still expected to be near major hurricane intensity as it moves toward the central Caribbean and passes near Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands on Thursday. Additional weakening is expected afterward, though Beryl is expected to remain a hurricane in the northwestern Caribbean.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles (205 km).

– Tropical storm conditions are expected in the warning area along the southern coast of Hispaniola later today.

– Storm surge could raise water levels up to 1 to 3 feet above ground level in areas of onshore winds along the southern coast of Hispaniola.

– Rainfall from Beryl’s outer bands could impact parts of Hispaniola today through Wednesday, with 100 to 150 millimeters of rain possible.

– Swells are also expected to reach the southern coasts of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola later today. These swells are expected to cause potentially life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
