Haiti – Justice: Amnesty International’s reaction to the decision to extend and redesignate Haiti to TPS
01/07/2024 08:46:57
In response to the Biden Administration’s decision to extend and redesignate Haiti for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Daniel Noroña, Americas Advocacy Director at Amnesty International USA, said:
“We applaud the Biden administration’s decision to extend and redesignate TPS for Haiti. It recognizes the dire situation Haitians face and will provide a lifeline for the safety of Haitians already in the United States.
But the Administration should go further and end all maritime expulsions and interdictions that result in forced returns to Haiti and immediately restore access to asylum for those arriving by land and sea.
We further urge the Biden administration to intensify its efforts to support the Haitian government in protecting its population. It must take urgent steps to ensure that international intervention does not exacerbate harm to civilians, whether by non-state actors or by the Multinational Security Support (MSS). We encourage the administration and Congress to promote Haitian-led solutions to the crisis and ensure that the human rights of Haitians are protected, both in Haiti and in the United States.
