P-au-P, July 22, 2024 [AlterPresse] — The Ambassador of the United States of America to the United Nations (UN), Linda Thomas-Greenfield, announced, this Monday, July 22, 2024, in Port-au-Prince, additional aid to the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMAS)without being able to say when this force will be completed, to combat armed violence in Haiti, observes AlterPresse.
The US Department of Defense will provide a “substantial increase” in the number of armored vehicles to the mission, to combat gangs that continue to terrorize the population, she said at a press conference attended by AlterPresse.
200 Kenyan police officers arrived in Haiti on Tuesday, July 16, 2024increasing the contingent to 400, including a first group landed on Tuesday June 25, 2024 in Port-au-Prince.
“We know that progress is not linear. There will inevitably be setbacks and obstacles, and yet this mission has opened the door to progress,” Thomas-Greenfield said.
The multinational force, led by Kenya, is expected to consist of 2,500 personnel from Kenya, the Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Benin, Chad and Jamaica.

The US ambassador to the UN visited Haiti at the head of a high-level delegation, including Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere Brian Andrew Nichols.
She met with members of the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC), Prime Minister Garry Conille and the Kenyan police command.
The American diplomat also announced an additional $60 million in humanitarian aid (Editor’s note: US $1.00=+ 140.00 gourdes; 1 euro=144.00 gourdes; 1 Canadian dollar=96.00 gourdes; 1 Dominican peso=2.40 gourdes today) to Haitiwhich is facing the dire consequences of gang violence.
Around 600,000 people have been forced to abandon their homes under pressure from bandits, while health and food problems are acute.
Without being “naive,” Linda Thomas-Greenfield expressed a “sense of hope” for Haiti, after “a remarkable day on the ground.” [apr 22/07/2024 20:00]
