Haiti: One child displaced every minute due to armed violence, warns UNICEF.
A UNICEF statement dated July 2, 2024 reveals an alarming situation in Haiti where a child is displaced every minute due to armed violence. Since March, the number of internally displaced children has increased by 60%, bringing the total to more than 300,000 children.
Nearly 600,000 people, half of them children, are currently displaced in Haiti and in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. “Children in Haiti continue to face a multitude of dangers, including horrific violence and critical levels of displacement,” said Catherine Russell, UNICEF Executive Director.
Displaced children are particularly vulnerable to violence, including assault, exploitation and sexual abuse. Their access to essential services such as health care, clean water and sanitation is often interrupted. “The needs in Haiti continue to grow, as do the dangers facing children,” added Catherine Russell, calling on the international community to step up its support.
L’UNICEF stresses the urgency of the situation: “Children must not pay with their lives and their future for a crisis generated by adults.”
