Haiti – Politics: American pressure on Conille to form an Electoral Council
09/07/2024 09:11:18
Brian Nichols, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, speaking after a meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille in Washington, called on the prime minister to prioritize the formation of an electoral council. “This critical step will give the Haitian people the opportunity to democratically choose their leaders for the first time in years,” Nichols said.
While acknowledging Conille’s efforts to improve security conditions in Haiti, Nichols stressed the urgent need to create an electoral council as a prerequisite to holding elections. The non-renewable term of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) expires on February 7, 2026, at which time a new president must be elected and sworn in.
Separately, during Tuesday’s meeting, Blinken and Conille discussed steps toward deploying a UN-backed multinational force to combat gang violence in Haiti. The first contingent of Kenyan police officers has already been deployed to Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-42632-haiti-flash-kenyans-are-in-haiti-video.html
