THE HAITI FACTOR, August 7, 2024._Accused of trafficking in arms and ammunition from the United States aboard the boat “Miss Lili”, Me Michelet Virgile, Government Commissioner at the Court of First Instance of Port-de-Paix at the time, was arrested on July 12, 2022 after his dismissal.
His arrest followed his decision to release two arms traffickers arrested in the case by the police, while he had acted, he said, at the request of Me Robinson Pierre-Louis, member of the Cabinet of the Minister of Justice and Public Security at the time, Me Berto Dorcé.
Also splashed by the scandal, the former Secretary General of the Port-au-Prince Bar, Mr. Robinson Pierre-Louis was also arrested 10 days later, on July 22 of the same year by the Bureau of Financial and Economic Affairs (BAFE). An order from the investigating magistrate, Walther Wesser Voltaire had sent them to the Criminal Court without the assistance of a jury.
However, their lawyers, in August 2023, had appealed the order of the investigating magistrate.
Since then, the two men have been imprisoned in the civil prison of Port-au-Prince. They were later transferred to another prison center after the attack by armed bandits on the National Penitentiary.
This Wednesday, August 7, 2024, they appeared for the seventh time before the Port-au-Prince Court of Appeal for a hearing. At the end of the session, they were provisionally released by the Haitian justice system.
After more than two years of incarceration, Me Robinson Pierre-Louis and Me Michelet Virgile are now free to move around.
