Haiti – Statistics: Health care for Haitians in the Dominican Republic (2024)

The number of consultations, emergency assistance, hospitalizations, diagnoses, surgical interventions and deliveries of Haitian patients continues this year in record numbers, according to statistics from the National Health Service (SNS).
During the first five months of 2024, the Dominican public hospital network offered 230,130 consultations to Haitian patients, or 8% of the total of these services offered, and 193,213 emergency care, or 9.14%.
According to the SNS, these services include, among others, consultations, emergencies, hospitalizations, diagnostics, surgical operations, caesarean sections and deliveries.
As for diagnoses, they increased from 765,673 in 2022 to more than 1 million (1,046,982) between January and May 2024.
The percentage of annual medical care provided by Haitian patients in the various health services offered in the Dominican hospital network over the last 6 years varied depending on the geographic area between 8 and 35%.
For the first 5 months of 2024, 23,700 hospitalizations were offered to Haitian patients, or 13.19% of the total offered in all hospitals in the country and 1,046,982 diagnostic services, or 8.68%. 14,611 surgical interventions were also performed on Haitian patients, or 7.59% of the total carried out in the public hospital network and 11,254 births were recorded, both by cesarean section and vaginally, or 33.3% of the total recorded in the country’s hospitals.
The report details that between January and May 2024, 16,712 caesarean deliveries were performed in public network hospitals, including 3,757 Haitian mothers (22.5%).
In addition, 17,079 natural births were recorded, including 7,497 in Haitian women in labor (43.9%).
Referring to the sum of the period of the first 5 months of the last 6 years analyzed, the report records a total of 118,561 deliveries by cesarean section in the country’s hospitals, including 23,491 to Haitian mothers, or 19.8%, as well as 132,824 deliveries by natural route and among them, 49,487 to Haitian mothers, or 37.3%.
