By Mythsouka Jean-Philippe

Haitian football today mourns the loss of one of its undisputed legends, René Vertus, who died at the venerable age of 87. Former emblematic goalkeeper of the Haitian Racing Club and the national team in the 1950s-60s, Vertus leaves behind an indelible legacy in the history of Haitian football.

His career has been dotted with triumphs and remarkable achievements. As a proud representative of the national team, he lifted the Paul Eugène Magloire Cup in 1956, then repeated the feat the following year by winning the CCCF Cup in 1957. But his exploits were not limited to international success . Vertus also shone on the continental scene, winning the prestigious CONCACAF Champions League in 1963 with Racing Club Haïtien, a performance that marked the history of the club and Haitian football as a whole.

But Vertus wasn’t just content to dominate on the pitch. His contribution to Haitian football extended well beyond his playing career. As a member of the technical staff, he participated in the 1974 World Cup, providing his valuable expertise and experience to guide the national team. In 1979, he added another trophy to his tally by winning the Caribbean Nations Cup as a coach, demonstrating his exceptional skills and leadership.

His name will forever be engraved in the annals of Haitian football as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time. His victory in both the CONCACAF Nations Cup and the Caribbean Cup as a player and coach makes him a unique figure in the history of Haitian football, alongside some other legends like Antoine Tassy.

Beyond his influence on the pitch, René Vertus was also a respected man outside of football, exercising his talents in public administration as a financial inspector at the Ministry of Finance and the Economy. His modesty and dedication both on and off the field will remain an inspiring example for future generations of Haitian footballers.

With the death of René Vertus, Haitian football loses not only an exceptional player, but also a true ambassador of sportsmanship and excellence. His legacy will continue to shine, lighting the path for future generations of players and coaches who will follow in his footsteps with admiration and respect.
