Hati Prime Minister: the Fritz curse!

It seems that the first name Fritz has become a sort of curse for those who aspire to occupy the post of Prime Minister in Haiti. In a series of events worthy of a political comedy, several contenders named Fritz discovered that the path to the Prime Minister’s office was strewn with pitfalls.

In February 2016, Fritz Alphonse Jean was selected by the provisional president, Jocelerme Privert, for the post of Prime Minister. Full of hope, he formed his government in March of the same year, but it failed to pass the test of ratification by Parliament. The deputies simply swept it aside like a dead leaf as it passed.

Then came Fritz William Michel, appointed Prime Minister by President Jovenel Moïse in July 2019. He quickly formed his joint government, but it was never ratified by the Senate. The population, always quick to tease, gave him the hilarious nickname “Jabrit amelyore”, which well sums up his brief adventure in power.

In April 2024, it was the turn of Fritz Bélizaire to be designated Transitional Prime Minister by the Transitional Presidential Council. But things took a turn worthy of a political sitcom when public opinion expressed its disagreement. The Councilors, caught off guard, had to revise their plans. The rules of the game were changed along the way, with the majority going from four to five members out of seven. In the end, it was Garry Conille who won the jackpot, while Fritz Bélizaire was kindly thanked for his “service”.

In Haiti, it seems, having the first name Fritz and ambitions for the post of Prime Minister do not go well together. Perhaps one day, someone will manage to break this “Fritz curse” and lead a career in the Prime Minister’s Office without any problems.

In the meantime, citizens can still be entertained by following the twists and turns of Haitian politics, a comedy that never lacks twists and turns.
