According to the World Health Organization, asthma is a chronic lung condition that affects people of all ages. It is caused by inflammation and contracture of the muscles around the airways, making it more difficult to breathe.

People suffering from asthma disease have symptoms such as: cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, mild to severe and intermittent.

According to specialists, this disease can be managed and there are suitable treatments for it. It is advisable to consult a doctor if you experience any of the above symptoms.

Here are Five Things to Know About Asthma

  1. Cardiac asthma is not asthma

According to the specialized site Dog, cardiac asthma is not the same as bronchial asthma. In fact, the former is a cardiovascular disease but its nickname is due to symptomatic similarities shared with asthma.

  1. There are several types of asthma
  1. Intermittent asthma manifested by infrequent attacks, without manifestation of symptoms between attacks. Symptoms generally appear during exercise or in a stressful or other situation;
  2. Persistent asthma is a more serious form of asthma with more regular attacks. Sufferers also experience symptoms outside of attacks. In this type of asthma, there are 3 subtypes which are:
  1. Mild persistent asthma where the symptoms and the use of a bronchodilator (medication which helps fight against the abnormal contraction of the muscles of the wall of the bronchi) can take place once or twice a week. Nocturnal asthma is usually present at least twice a month. (Nocturnal asthma: wheezing and coughing present at night.) and which occurs at least once a week, according to the specialist site Heroic Santé;
  2. Moderate persistent asthma, for its part, presents daily symptoms. Which means that sufferers are forced to use the bronchodilator daily as well.
  3. Severe persistent asthma presents with permanent symptoms and nocturnal asthma is common in this case. It has the ability to limit physical activities because the disease is severe.
  1. Asthma comes in two forms
  1. Allergic asthma : the trigger for attacks will be exposure to allergens, according to Qare, specifying that these can be pollen, dust, mites, among others. A person with allergies is more likely to develop asthma;
  2. Non-allergic asthma where crises can manifest themselves at any time. They are favored in particular by physical effort and the environment is a triggering factor.
  1. The best treatment for asthma is basic treatment

According to the specialist site Heroic health, the way to treat this chronic disease can vary depending on the type and intensity of asthma. The treatment that is nevertheless often used for different cases is basic treatment. This includes the inhalation of corticosteroids, often associated with taking long-acting bronchodilators. Basic treatment is therefore a treatment to be followed over the long term and regularly. The benefits are generally felt after two or three weeks.

  1. Asthma, a chronic and inflammatory disease of the airways

“This disease causes breathing difficulties as well as a reduction in the flow of inspired and expired air caused by a contraction of the muscles surrounding the bronchi, a swelling of the interior wall of them and a significant secretion of mucus. Asthma manifests itself on a daily basis in ‘attacks’ of greater or lesser importance depending on the person. The duration of these also varies depending on the patient and can range from a few minutes to a few hours. During an asthma attack, the person will experience so-called ‘wheezing’ breathing,” HS explains.
