Numerous scientific studies have shown that listening to music at work has many benefits, particularly on performance and productivity. One of the very first studies carried out on the subject in 1972 revealed that listening to music while working had a positive impact on the performance of employees who worked in noisy environments and who performed repetitive tasks.

Music improves performance and productivity

Many other studies followed, considering different workplaces, revealing that listening to music in the workplace has positive effects on performance and productivity.

As an example, the specialist magazine Passeport Santé cites a study carried out by researchers at the University of Illinois in the United States in 1995, on office workers working while listening to music on a chain stereo, showing that their productivity was 14% higher than those who did not listen to it.

More recently, in 2017, in a LinkedIn-Spotify survey carried out among 13,383 people, 79% of professionals questioned said that music improves their productivity, 65% consider that it allows them to be more concentrated and 42%, that it has a relaxing effect.

Music to be in a better mood and less stressed

Neuroscientists Anne J. Blood and Robert J. Zatorre carried out a study in 2001, demonstrating that music promoted the release of dopamine, nicknamed the “happiness hormone” by stimulating the brain’s reward circuit.

Other studies have shown that listening to music also has the effect of reducing stress, by reducing the level of cortisol, also called the “stress hormone”.

What music to listen to?

The University of Cambridge carried out a study, cited by PS, demonstrating that it is preferable to choose neutral music, preferably instrumental if you want to increase your concentration in the workplace, since music with text requires attention. The study recommends listening to jazz, classical music or background music to increase concentration.
