Ladies, when buying your underwear, you should not only consider the beauty of the models but also the materials!

Some of them promote the appearance of vaginal infections, warns a gynecologist interviewed by the Huffington Post.

Underwear made from synthetic materials should be avoided

The underwear you’re wearing may be bad for your vaginal health.

Panties, thongs, boyshorts and other lace tangas, and more precisely those made of synthetic materials can promote the appearance of irritation and vaginal bacterial infections.

Lace underwear is often made from synthetic materials like nylon or polyester. These materials don’t allow the skin to breathe. Instead, they trap heat and sweat against the vulva, a breeding ground for bacteria.

Synthetic materials in underwear can disrupt the delicate balance of vaginal flora, which helps protect the vagina against pathogens. By creating a humid and warm environment, synthetic materials increase the risk of irritation, bacterial vaginosis and fungal infections”, warns Dr Shazia Malik, gynecologist.

The specialist therefore recommends that women avoid buying underwear:

  • en nylon ;
  • a polyester;
  • containing elastane;
  • in satin.

Opt instead for natural fiber underwear like the cotton. “Organic cotton is the ideal choice because it does not contain any irritants or pesticides.”, says Dr. Malik.

Some practical advice to protect your vaginal flora

You can preserve the balance of your vaginal flora by adopting good intimate habits:

  • Change your underwear every day and whenever you feel that it is damp from sweat, or soiled by vaginal discharge or menstrual flow.
  • Sleep without panties to let your vulva “breathe” at night.
  • Avoid clothing that is too tight to limit the risk of rubbing against the skin.
  • Use mild products to wash your underwear.
  • Consider probiotic cures to maintain the balance of your vaginal flora.
