As a prelude to the International Day of Family Remittances (this Sunday, June 16, 2024), the Embassy of Haiti near the State of Qatar and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) organized a round table around the theme of remittances and diasporas. Around thirty Ambassadors, Heads of Mission and representatives of the World Bank and the Private Sector took part in this first of a series of planned discussions, organized within the United Nations House in Qatar,

During these discussions, the speakers addressed: the leading role that the Diaspora plays in the development of their country of origin as well as the socio-economic and cultural enrichment that it brings to host countries; the immense and still untapped potential of remittances as a development player in the global financial ecosystem and finally the support that diplomatic and consular missions can provide to the objectives of optimizing remittances from the Diaspora, as a financing tool Innovative for Development.

Furthermore, the Ambassador of Haiti Francois Guillaume II, moderator of the round table, accompanied by Ms. Vichy De La Fayette Thibeaud, Minister-Counsellor, welcomed the discussions rich in circumstantial complements and the recommendations that followed. .

The organizing members also took advantage of this activity to pay a vibrant tribute to all the daughters and sons of Haiti living in foreign lands. According to them, the diaspora contributes more than 20% of the Gross Domestic Product in remittances to the Haitian economy. Also, it represents an invaluable source of economic and social development for the country, they explained.
