The National Police Service (NPS) provided an update on the status of police officers stationed in Haiti.
In a statement issued Monday, July 1, Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome said the Kenyan police collaborated with the Haitian National Police to identify key areas of operational concern and conducted patrols.
“Since arriving in Haiti, our officers have worked closely with their host, the Haitian National Police, and have thus far undertaken strategic mapping of key areas of operational concern and conducted several joint patrols in Port-au-Prince “, explained Mr. Koome.
Koome dismissed rumors that seven Kenyan police officers had been killed in the ongoing mission in Haiti.
The IG explained that the officers were well received by Haitians, that they are safe and ready to carry out their mission.
“We have brought to the attention of our office the unfounded, false, unpatriotic and malicious claims circulating on social media that seven National Police Service officers have been killed in Haiti,” the IG added.
“We wish to clarify to the public that our officers left Kenya on June 24, 2024 and were not only warmly welcomed by the great Haitian people upon arrival, but are also all safe and sound and ready to carry out their clear and specific mandate.”
Furthermore, Koome reiterated that the NPS mission in Haiti is a noble task for the well-being of Haitians.
He also called on Kenyans to support the police as they fly the Kenyan national flag high, while discharging their international mandate of maintaining law and order.
Koome also said the NPS is committed to collaborating with reputable media outlets to inform the public about the progress of the mission in Haiti.
