International funding of $44 million for education in Haiti

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Education Above All Foundation (EAA) and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) will finance the efforts of the Haitian State as part of the reforms undertaken in the field of education , to the tune of $44 million. The announcement was made by stakeholders on April 19 of the current year at the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP).

“The Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) informs the public in general and the educational community in particular that its partners from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Education Above All Foundation (EAA) and of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) have just announced, on April 19, 2024, funding of $44 million to support the efforts of the Haitian State as part of the reforms undertaken in the field of education. , informed the ministry concerned in a press release dated Thursday, April 25.

According to the press release consulted by Loop, the IDB will provide 15 million of this sum, the GPE 19 million, and the EAA will provide 10 million dollars to the Haitian government to support its efforts in the field of education. These efforts concern ongoing actions aimed at strengthening the information management system, continuing curriculum reform, combating school dropouts, improving the quality of learning, and strengthening the school canteen program based on local products in notably offering hot meals to schools in marginalized areas.

“The MENFP welcomes this strategic partnership aimed in particular at protecting the right to education, in a difficult context marked by attacks against schools and universities where many children are deprived of their fundamental right to education,” reads -one in the press release from the ministry.

For his part, the titular minister of the Ministry of National Education, Nesmy Manigat, thanked his partners for their continued support to the education sector in Haiti which faces numerous challenges requiring a pooling of resources and skills and innovative initiatives in order to strengthen the resilience of stakeholders.

The official stressed that this support will strengthen the new curricular orientation framework which includes several new subjects, in particular civic education, the arts, sport, economics, the shift towards school textbooks in Haitian Creole, school canteen based on local products.

Speaking on the importance of this funding for education in Haiti, the Director General of the Education Above All Foundation, Al Sulaiti Faha, said he saw this partnership as an important step in his organization’s mission to ensure the most vulnerable children, whatever the circumstances, access to quality education.

« […] Promoting access and retention to quality primary education in Haiti is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic investment in the long-term stability and development of the country,” he said.

For her part, the CEO of the Global Partnership for Education, Laura Frigenti, stressed that the institution she leads remains strongly committed to building a more resilient education system in Haiti, so that the most vulnerable girls and boys can learn and build better tomorrows for themselves and their communities.

As for IDB President Ilan Goldfajn, the Bank’s commitment to Haiti remains unwavering. “The IDB intends to contribute to the quest for a better life for young Haitians by increasing access and improving the quality of education, with the support of other partners,” reported the MENFP.
