July 5, 2021: Ariel Henry is appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Haiti by presidential decree. Two days later, President Jovenel Moïse is assassinated by Colombian mercenaries in his private residence. Ariel Henry will be installed in his functions on July 20, 2021 following a standoff with Claude Joseph, interim Prime Minister at the time of the assassination. The latter, not wanting to give up power, had to do so after pressure from the international community.

July 5, 1934: visit of American President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Cap-Haitien. He became that day the first sitting American president to set foot on Haitian soil. He signed an agreement with President Sténio Vincent that would lead to the “virtual” end of the American occupation in Haiti.

July 5, 1908: a fire destroyed more than a quarter of the capital, Port-au-Prince. The fire that broke out in a ruined building at the corner of Rue de la Réunion and Rue des Casernes quickly spread, fanned by a strong wind, and reached the arsenal, which exploded. 1,200 houses destroyed, more than 10,000 homeless, such was the toll of this fire.

July 5, 2022 : 4 employees of the National Old Age Insurance Office (Then) are kidnapped in Port-au-Prince. They will regain their freedom against ransom, on July 13, 2022.
