Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. – July 8, 1988. General Henri Namphy attempts to reject the 1987 Constitution in its entirety.
Returning to power following the coup against President Leslie Manigat, General Henry Namphy argued that the 1987 Constitution did not meet the aspirations of the people because it was written with emotion in a climate of passion. For this reason, he decided to annul it. This decision was followed by a series of protests across the country. On September 17, the general and his strictly military government were dismissed by soldiers of the presidential guard.
July 8, 1832. Fire in Port-au-Prince
A fire that broke out at 2 p.m. at the home of a merchant who lived on Rue de Quartier, now Rue Monseigneur Guilloux, and whose house faced the barracks of the grenadiers of the President’s Guard, destroyed seven islets and more than 300 houses including the Government printing office and the Chamber of Accounts.
July 8, 1926. Death of Sudre Dartiguenave
President of Haiti from 1915-1922, he was the first president of the American occupation (1915-1934). The American forces had chosen him because he met their expectations. Indeed, he had used the brute force of the marines to crush all resistance (war against the cacos) and silence all protest (martial law, law against the press).
Sudre Dartiguenave was born on April 6, 1862 in Anse à Veau. A lawyer by profession, he was a deputy under the government of Tiresias Simon Sam and senator of the republic in 1910. He was still president of the Senate when the Americans landed.
