In an open letter to President William Ruto, members of Kenya’s Generation Z have responded to his recent remarks condemning the ongoing protests.
On July 21, President Ruto declared “enough is enough” and vowed to protect the nation from what he called “faceless, formless and anonymous anarchists,” sparking a wave of backlash from the country’s Gen Z population.
The open letter, published under the title “Statement by the People of Kenya”, accuses President Ruto of resorting to intimidation tactics and failing to address legitimate concerns raised by the protesters.
The protests organised by young people, whose main aim was to demand accountability and end corruption, were met with what the letter describes as “attempts to silence and threaten us”.
Generation Z’s response to Ruto
“The letter begins: ‘Enough is enough.’ “We, the people of Kenya, have given our leaders many opportunities to address our concerns, but this cannot continue. We must come together to protect our nation and ensure that Kenya remains a true democracy,” the letter reads in part.
The letter criticises President Ruto for his description of the protesters as “looters and thugs”, arguing that such rhetoric is an attempt to delegitimise the movement and distract from the real issues.
