Police in Nakuru County are investigating an incident in which a retired police officer shot dead his wife before turning the gun on himself in Chemanel village, Nakuru County on Monday.
According to Kuresoi South Police Commander Jeremiah Leariwala, Joel Langat, who served as Nakuru’s long-time police commissioner, shot his wife, Sarah Chepkemoi, in the head.
The police have opened an investigation into the circumstances that led Mr Langat, who holds a firearms licence, to commit this act of violence.
Mr Leariwala said neighbours became concerned when they noticed the couple’s compound had been locked throughout the day on Monday and their poultry was left unattended and making noise.
Upon investigation, they found their house locked from inside and upon breaking in, they discovered Ms Chepkemoi’s lifeless body on a bed, with a trail of blood leading to another room where Mr Langat was found seriously injured in the chest and bleeding.
“Mr Langat was rushed to St Joseph Hospital in Molo for treatment but succumbed to his injuries. The police have been alerted by the zonal chief and investigations are underway. We were at the presidential ceremony when the incident happened,” Mr Leariwala told NTV.
