The civil society initiative, in a note, expressed deep concern about the worsening security and socio-political situation in Haiti since the entry into office of the Transitional Presidential Council and the Government led by Prime Minister Garry Conille. In a statement released this Thursday, the organization emphasizes that the Prime Minister’s call for armed groups to lay down their arms has been largely ignored, giving way to a rise in power of gangs that continue to operate with impunity.
Gangs, despite the losses suffered, appear to be reorganizing and intensifying their attacks, including against state officials. The initiative highlights the ability of criminals to supply themselves with weapons and ammunition, perpetuating a cycle of violence and insecurity that weakens the Haitian state. The organization calls for urgent awareness on the part of national leaders and the international community, so that adequate measures are implemented to address this challenge.
The ISC also calls for the creation of a National Security Council, stressing that strengthening security capacities requires additional resources, both human and material. Furthermore, allegations of corruption within the current administration are denounced, with a call for rigorous investigations to ensure the integrity of leaders and transparency in the management of public affairs.
The organization stresses the urgent importance of establishing a Government Action Control Body to ensure effective supervision of government activities and combat corruption. According to it, the absence of this mechanism would only strengthen a system already deeply clogged by harmful practices.
Faced with this alarming situation, the ISC also calls on all citizens to mobilize and take responsibility for working towards a stable and prosperous future for Haiti. The need for collective commitment and determined action has never been more pressing.
