Dominican citizens went to the polls on Sunday, May 19, 2024 to participate in a decisive presidential election. After a day of voting which began early in the morning and ended late in the afternoon around 5 a.m., the official results were announced, confirming the victory of the outgoing president. Luis Abinader with 57.16% of the votes, 94.58% of the votes counted, according to data from the Central Election Commission (JCE).

His main opponent, Leonel Fernández, candidate of the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP), obtained 29.34% of the votes, and Abel Martínez, of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), obtained only 10.21% of the votes. voice.

This election was not only to elect the president, but also to determine the future vice president, the 190 members of the Chamber of Deputies and the 32 senators who will constitute the National Congress. Luis Abinader, candidate of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), was able to convince a majority of voters to grant him a second four-year term.

The electoral campaign was marked by numerous debates on the economy, security and social reforms. Abinader, who led the country for the past four years, highlighted his achievements and plans for the future to woo voters. For his part, Leonel Fernández, former president and current leader of the FP Party, tried to regain power by promising significant change and a return to certain policies of his previous mandate.

Despite these promises, it was Abinader who managed to convince the majority of voters. His campaign, focused on economic stability and the continuation of the reforms initiated during his first term, seems to have found a favorable response among voters.

Alongside the presidential election, voters also chose members of the National Congress. The 190 elected deputies and 32 senators will play a crucial role in crafting laws and overseeing the government. The outcome of these legislative elections will have a significant impact on Abinader’s ability to govern effectively.

The elections generally went well, despite some incidents reported in the Dominican media in certain regions. National and international observers including the OAS were present to follow the progress of the vote.

Sunday’s vote was therefore decisive for the political and diplomatic future of the Dominican Republic. Tensions with Haiti, the strict migration policy and the ambitions of the different parties made this election particularly observed, both nationally and internationally. Dominicans now have a date with their future, hoping that this vote clarifies and stabilizes the direction in which their country is heading.
