French President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly and the calling of early legislative elections, less than an hour after exit polls predicted a landslide victory for the far right in the European elections.

Macron said in a speech to the nation: “I have listened to your message, your concerns and I will not leave them unanswered.”

The legislative elections will be held on June 30 and July 6.

The president admitted that the European elections did not bring him “a good result”. According to polls, the Renaissance list obtained around 15% of the votes, or less than half of what the National Rally obtained.
