Manchester City is going through a dark period. Beaten 4-0 by Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium, the reigning English champions recorded a fifth consecutive defeat in all competitions, an unprecedented situation under the Pep Guardiola era.
Rodri presents his Ballon d’Or, but the shipwreck follows. The evening had started well for Mancunian supporters, with the presentation of Rodri’s Ballon d’Or, rewarding his exceptional performances last season. But without him on the pitch, still injured, City look unrecognizable.
Tottenham, for their part, delivered a masterful performance. Led by a great James Maddison, the Spurs punished the Citizens at every opportunity.
Tottenham, in great form this season, delivered a masterful performance. Under the leadership of James Maddison, Spurs took control from the start:
In the 13th minute, Maddison opened the scoring with a precise strike after a perfect combination with Son Heung-min. A few minutes later (20th), he took advantage of a defensive error from Ruben Dias to double the lead, plunging City into doubt. The second half continued in the same vein, Pedro Porro, with a deflected long shot in the 52nd minute, increased the score. In added time (90+3rd), Brennan Johnson, on a lightning counter-attack, sealed the victory for Spurs.
For Manchester City, the absence of Rodri in midfield was once again glaring. Although Kevin De Bruyne made a comeback, he could not inject the usual creativity.
Defensively, the Citizens multiplied individual errors, while offensively, Erling Haaland was non-existent, due to a lack of good balls.
