May 16, 1812 : Alexandre Pétion, President of the Republic of Haiti (West and South departments), ordered Colonel Tahet to form and send a detachment of one hundred men. These men, recruited from among the armed farmers of the communes of Miragoâne, Saint Michel and Anse-à-Veau, were to support the Republic against Christophe.

May 16, 2008 : The Lima Declaration, adopted by the leaders of 60 countries at the Fifth Summit of the European Unionfrom Latin America and the Caribbean, called on the international community to react quickly to help Haiti cope with the rise in prices of basic foods.

May 16, 2008 : On the occasion of the presidential elections in the Dominican Republic, aimed at re-electing outgoing President Leonel Fernández, the Dominican authorities closed the border with Haiti.

May 16, 2009 : The funeral of Carlo Mérilus, a 20-year-old Haitian worker who was brutally decapitated in Santo Domingo, took place in Verrettes (Artibonite, north). The ceremony was attended by family members and friends, emotional and angry at the government.
