May 23, 1802: The generals, lieutenants of Toussaint Louverture surrender to the authorities of the expeditionary army. Among them are Jean Jacques Dessalines, Belair, Lamartinière, and Gabart. Under orders from Leclerc, Dessalines takes up stationing in Artibonite.
May 23, 1919: Birth of Maurice Sixto, internationally renowned Haitian storyteller and speaker. Born in Gonaïves on May 23, 1919 to parents from the island of St. Thomas, Maurice Sixto undoubtedly remains Haiti’s best-known and most appreciated storyteller. Painting Haitian society with such vivid color, his paintings appeal to everyone, and we all recognize ourselves in them, regardless of our place in the social scale. Maurice Sixto left us on May 12, 1984, following a tragic fire.
May 23, 1936 : Death of the Haitian poet Damoclès Vieux.- Damoclès Vieux belonged to the literary movement known as Generation of “La Ronde”, named after the publication of this movement. His best-known works are two collections of poems: The Captive Wing (1913) and Last Flowerings (1948). He was born in 1876.
May 23, 2004 : Torrential rains fell on the southeastern part of Haiti during the night of May 23 to 24. There are 1,232 dead, 1,443 missing and 31,130 people affected. The towns of Mapou, Belle-Anse with 432 deaths, Bodary 350 deaths and Fonds-Verrettes 237 victims are the most affected localities. Friday May 28 is declared a day of national mourning by the Boniface/Latortue interim government.
