May 5, 1821 : Napoleon Bonaparte died in exile on Saint Helena of an aggravated ulcer. It was this French emperor who decided to reestablish slavery in Saint-Domingue, although it had been abolished since the proclamation of August 29, 1793. He sent an expedition there of more than 20,000 with General Leclerc at its head. But the slaves and their leaders still won the independence of Haiti on January 1, 1804.
May 5, 1915 : Rosalvo Bobo, at the head of a group of insurgents, made a very notable entry into Cap-Haitien. Former Minister of the Interior in the short-lived government of Davilmar Théodore, Bobo led an insurrection after the latter’s departure. Proclaiming himself head of the provisional government, he formed a few days later a council of ministers composed of six personalities.
May 5, 2005 : the Haitian government announces the adoption of the maximum penalty of forced labor for life against the perpetrators and accomplices of kidnapping. Before the promulgation of this decree, the law had established the maximum penalty for kidnapping at 5 years’ imprisonment.
May 5, 2008 : The special Senate committee receives documents from Prime Minister-designate Ericq Pierre as part of the ratification process of its choice. This choice will never be ratified.
May 5, 2009 : the Senate of the Republic unanimously votes for the bill raising the minimum wage in Haiti to 200 gourdes.
