Former Minister of Justice and Public Security, Me Camille Leblanc, expressed his strong disagreement regarding the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH). During his intervention on the program “Guest of the day” on Vision 2000 radio, on Tuesday, July 15, 2024, he criticized the continued presence of the United Nations in the country, stating that despite their intervention for more than 20 years, armed gangs continue to grow stronger and crises persist. Me Leblanc particularly pointed out the passivity of BINUH in the face of growing instability in Haiti.
Me Camille Leblanc also denounced BINUH’s controversial decision to support a former leader accused of gang ties, stressing that this alliance aimed to consolidate the power of former President Jovenel Moïse. He regretted that the United Nations did not take measures to combat gangs when they were still weak. According to him, before renewing BINUH’s mandate, a thorough assessment of its actions and a detailed report on its management should be carried out. However, the United Nations Security Council decided on July 12, 2024, to extend BINUH’s mandate by one year, until July 15, 2025.
