Ruling left-wing candidate Claudia Sheinbaum won Mexico’s presidential election in a landslide on Sunday. The first official results, announced by the National Electoral Institute (INE), show that the former mayor of Mexico City obtained between 58 and 60% of the votes. Her opposition rival, former center-right senator Xochitl Galvez, received between 26 and 28% of the votes, according to Guadalupe Taddei, president of the INE. The centrist candidate Jorge Alvarez Maynez, for his part, won between 9 and 10% of the vote.
During the night from Sunday to Monday, Xochitl Galvez, opposition candidate in the presidential election in Mexico, recognized Claudia Sheinbaum’s victory. “A few minutes ago I called Claudia Sheinbaum to acknowledge the results of the election,” she said during a speech to supporters at a Mexico City hotel. The first partial results from the INE indicate that Ms. Sheinbaum is ahead of Ms. Galvez by around thirty points.
Claudia Sheinbaum, thanks to a large lead, marked the presidential election with a notable victory. The results provided by the INE show a clear domination with 58 to 60% of the votes. Xochitl Galvez had to admit defeat in the face of such a gap, while Jorge Alvarez Maynez captured between 9 and 10% of the votes.
