Jury president Dufresne Guillaume recalls that the request for release produced by the defense counsel grants provisional release to lawyers Robinson Pierre-Louis, former secretary of the Port-au-Prince Bar Association, and Michelet Virgile, former government commissioner of the Port-de-Paix jurisdiction, charged in the case of weapons and ammunition seized from the Miss Lily boat in July 2022.
After more than 24 months in preventive detention, lawyers Michelet Virgile and Robinson Pierre-Louis were released this Wednesday, August 7, 2024 after a request for the lifting of the committal warrant produced by the detainees’ defense counsel before the Port-au-Prince Court of Appeal. The jury composed of judges Dufresne Guillaume (President), Ocnam Clamé Daméus and Jeudilien Fanfan ordered the release of the detainees after a request made well before the escape from the National Penitentiary, in March 2024, specifies magistrate Dufresne Guillaume in his order. He maintains that the lifting of the warrant is a provisional measure that does not end the procedure.
In response, the former secretary of the Council of the Bar Association of Port-au-Prince, Robinson Pierre-Louis, proclaims his innocence in the scandal of the release of the accused cited in the trafficking of weapons and ammunition seized in the Miss Lily boat in July 2022, in Port-de-Paix. He calls for an end to the reign of impunity while encouraging the press to engage in this battle.
One of the members of the Defense Council, Iswick Théophin, welcomes the jury’s decision. He reports that the continuation of the case has been transferred to the Port-de-Paix jurisdiction for further action. Through this order, the lawyer maintains that the defeat of the law is always provisional.
