Haitian slammer Mister M 1er will represent Haiti at the Golden Poète International and at the Slam World Cup, respectively in Gabon and France.
In an interview with Juno7, the humanities and social sciences student at the State University of Haiti expresses his desire to restore the country’s image through these competitions.
“It is an indescribable satisfaction to know that I have to wear the two-tone, it is not only a reward for years of hard work, but one more step for a quadriplegic country”, declares Mister M 1er, who aspires to win these competitions to promote Haiti on the international scene, despite the context of violence and unrest which affects the country.
The Slam World Cup will take place from May 6 to 12, with the participation of 20 countries. As for the Golden Poète International, it is organized as part of the National & International Festival “Slam Standing Ovation” and will be held on Friday May 24, 2024 at the French Institute of Gabon. Mister M 1er describes this event as a competition where poets from all over the world offer their best performances to win the prestigious title of Golden International Poet.
Despite the chaos reigning in Port-au-Prince, Mister M 1er prepares with determination, isolating himself in Kenscoff to rehearse and avoid noise disturbances. Champion of the slam poetry competition organized by Tousteslionne in 2022 and named “Slam Revelation” the same year, he is also champion of the national slam poetry competition in 2023.
However, he deplores the lack of support from public or private institutions for his participation in these competitions. “No support, apart from my immediate environment,” he laments.
Passionate about literature and philosophy, Mister M 1st encourages his compatriots to read as a means of understanding reality and rising. “Let him not forget that: Love endures!”, he concludes.
