The 30th will be held from August 19 to 25e edition of the Street Basketball tournament, at Parc Saint-Laurent, Montreal North, where it all began in the summer of 1992.
Having served as the cradle for basketball events in Montreal North, the Basket de rue tournament organized by the Youth House L’Ouverture Since its very beginning, it has offered young people from Montreal North and its surrounding areas the opportunity to showcase their talents in a festive and healthy competitive atmosphere.
“I am honoured to be the Honorary President of the 30th edition of the Street Basketball Tournament! This tournament was a must-see event in my neighbourhood during my childhood and continues to be so for the community today. It is a privilege to be associated with it, and especially to see it return to Parc Saint-Laurent! With the Maison des Jeunes, the borough of Montréal-Nord and the Maizon Dort Foundation, we continue to inspire our young people to persevere and believe in their dreams.” – Luguentz Dort, Montreal NBA player, Canadian Olympian, founder of Maizon Dort and honorary president of the event
This is Luguentz’s second participation as honorary president of a street basketball tournament that, since its inception, has acted as a breeding ground for professional basketball. Other well-known NBA names including Benedict Mathurin, Cristopher Boucher and Samuel Dalembert have served this Montreal-North tournament.
Since its founding, the Street Basketball has been a sporting and festive event aimed at bringing together young people from different neighbourhoods in Montreal and even Quebec in general in joy and harmony. The tournament also promotes community engagement and prevention among participants.
“I grew up with street basketball! What makes me most proud is being able to participate not only as a player but also as an entrepreneur to give back to this event that rocked my youth.” -Jeremiah Hamel-Carey, spokesperson.
This year, a record has already been broken: that of an explosive registration rate of 50 teams who come from everywhere. These young people aged between 12 and 25 will compete in their respective categories: 12-14 years old, 15-17 years old or 18 years old + and a women’s category. The qualifying matches will be held between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. The teams qualified for the semi-finals and finals will play during the weekend for the grand prize of $500 and the medals.
As usual, there will be musical entertainment, artistic performances, dance troupes, face painting, food kiosks and sponsors to inform you.
Those who want to financially support the Maison des Jeunes L’Ouverture in this initiative will be able to buy sweaters and hoodies with the Basket de rue logo on site. We look forward to seeing you or seeing you again in large numbers!
