They are small creatures with a distinctive sound, mosquitoes. A species particularly made of it: the tiger mosquito also known by the scientific name ofAedes albopictus. Indeed, the latter can transmit the dengue.

To combat these insects, there are different solutions. Certain natural tips are sometimes touted, such as using lemongrass or planting certain plants like lavender or marigold. But mosquito repellents are also available on the market. However, toxic substances are included in the composition of some of these products, which can have health consequences. In its latest issue, the magazine 60 million consumers gives his advice on how to choose the right repellent.

How to choose the right mosquito repellent?

For the purposes of this test, the experts from the magazine 60 million consumers analyzed the composition and effectiveness of 15 skin repellentss, that is to say to apply to the skin, and 5 textile repellents, that is to say to spray on clothing and other fabrics. This panel is “representative of the diversity of biocides marketed in France, namely with synthetic and natural active ingredients”, detail the authors.

To do this, 60 million consumers applied the repellent to one arm, exposed to two types of mosquitoes. A “common” mosquito (the Culex pipiens) and a tiger mosquito (called Aedes albopictus). Then, they measured the time before the mosquito landed on the exposed surface, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The authors specify that the temperature was 29 degrees and the residual humidity was 65%.

Mosquito repellents: which components to favor and which to avoid?

So, what are the most effective mosquito repellents and how to choose them? 60 million consumers found that products based on IR3535 and DEET, two synthetic molecules benefiting from marketing authorization, were the most effective. The magazine notes an effectiveness ranging from 11 a.m. for the most efficient, to 8:30 a.m.. Icardin, another molecule, is placed in “intermediate position”. On the other hand, the consumer association reminds that products containing the DDT molecule, which is banned, should not be used.

Regarding products based on active ingredients of natural origin, such as “hydrated and cyclized eucalyptus citriodora oil (also called PMD or citriodiol) and geraniol”, the magazine specifies that they fall into category TP19 of the European Biocides Regulation. These offer protection “plus variable”.

Also, these repellents are not harmless for your health depending on the person using them. Indeed, 60 million consumers recalls that the “DEET is only authorized below 30% in pregnant women and below 10% in young children”. For children under 2 years old, the proportion of IR3535 must be below 35% and 20% in children under 6 months and pregnant women. Finally, a product containing icaridin should not be used if its composition is not below 25% before 2 years and below 20% in pregnant women.
