A group of 88 US Democratic Party lawmakers sent a letter to President Joe Biden, denouncing the restrictions imposed by Israel on the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. According to them, these restrictions call into question respect for American law.

Despite recognizing Israel’s right to self-defense and condemning Hamas’ Oct. 7 terror attack, Democratic lawmakers say Israeli restrictions violate foreign aid law (Foreign Aid Act). In their letter, they urge Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take steps to counter the effects of these restrictive policies.

Additionally, they warn that Israel risks losing its right to receive security assistance from the United States if restrictions on the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza continue. While reaffirming their support for defensive aid to Israel, Democrats emphasize the importance of ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza to avoid a famine that could compromise long-term security in the region.

On the other hand, Democrats welcome the Biden administration’s efforts to negotiate a ceasefire and avoid escalation in the region. However, they are calling for an increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza, including the opening of new delivery routes and entry points.

Since the start of the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip following Hamas attacks in October, thousands of deaths and injuries have been reported in the enclave, and the toll continues to rise.
