A homeless man frequenting Amsterdam Central Station returned a wallet forgotten on a train with its contents of around 2,000 euros, according to local police who rewarded him for his good citizenship.

Hadjer Al-Ali, 33, homeless for 18 months, made his discovery during a round to collect plastic bottles which he then exchanged for money.

There was “around 2,000 euros but unfortunately no identity papers or anything that would allow the owner to be contacted”, the police said.

“As we believe that honesty must pay, he received a +silver thumb+ prize that we sometimes award to citizens, with a gift voucher worth 50 euros,” added the authorities. If no one comes forward to claim the lost money within a year, the sum will return to him.

“No matter what I find, I always return it,” Mr. Al-Ali said in a video broadcast by local media De Stentor. “Maybe the owner has a business and can provide me with a job, or a place I could live in. You never know.”
