New armored vehicles were unloaded Saturday, July 6, 2024 at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, from a U.S. Air Force plane.
On Saturday, July 6, 2024, a total of 4 MRAP armored vehicles arrived at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince. These vehicles, according to available information, are intended to strengthen the capacities of Kenyan police officers of the Multinational Mission for Security Support (MMSS) in their fight against armed gangs operating in Haiti.
For the past week, Kenyan police patrols have been deployed in Port-au-Prince as part of a United Nations-backed mission to counter the influence of armed gangs in the capital.
Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille issued an ultimatum Saturday to gangs to lay down their weapons, coming shortly after gang leader Jimmy Cherisier, nicknamed “Barbecue” and a former police officer, raised the possibility of a national dialogue to restore peace in the country.
Conille clarified that any dialogue could only begin after the criminals were disarmed and recognized the authority of the state.
It should be noted that no official communication from the authorities has been made regarding the arrival this Saturday at Toussaint Louverture airport of this military equipment. However, according to available information, these armored vehicles are intended for the multinational security force led by Kenya, of which a first contingent of about 200 soldiers is already deployed in Haiti.
