The concert by Michel Martelly, former Haitian president and known by the stage name “Sweet Micky”, scheduled for September 1, 2024 in New York as part of the “Labor Day” celebrations, has been canceled by the organizers. This decision follows pressure related to the ongoing sanctions against Martelly for drug trafficking and his alleged support for criminal gangs.
According to available information, the cancellation comes after a series of protests organized by members of the Haitian diaspora in New York, who opposed his presence in the United States.
Moe Jersey, another promoter, confirmed to reporter Luckson Saint-Vil that local authorities had ordered the concert to be canceled on Sunday, August 25, 2024. It was reported that a direct call from the city’s police chief to the owner of the Empire Lounge venue sealed the concert’s fate, with the threat of severe penalties, including jail time, for any company doing business with Martelly.
In addition to pressure from authorities, Moe Jersey said he received numerous calls and letters from various local organizations demanding that Sweet Micky’s performance be canceled.
