In most women, ovulation does not cause any symptoms. But in some, it can manifest itself as temporary and most often benign pain.

What do these pains look like? How to relieve them? When to worry? We’ll explain it to you.

Pain during ovulation: what does it mean?

L’ovulation corresponds to the expulsion ofa mature egg by one of the two ovaries. It takes place 14 days before the first day of menstruation, regardless of the length of the cycle (28, 30, 34 days, etc.). In most women, ovulation goes unnoticed.

But in almost one in four menstrual women, it can cause pain in the lower abdomen, often acute, which lasts from a few hours to a few days. The pain can only be felt on one side but this is not systematic..

This pain can sometimes be accompanied by:

  • slight blood loss;
  • swollen lymph nodes in the groin;
  • of vaginal discharge resembling egg white (transparent, viscous and stringy);
  • nausea (when the pain is intense);
  • pain in the lower back.

The pain is fortunately temporary. They disappear spontaneously within a few hours, two days maximum.

To relieve them, you can take painkillers (paracetamol) or anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen). A hot water bottle placed on the stomach or a hot bath can also help relieve pain.

If the pain is too severe, talk to your doctor. He may prescribe hormonal treatment (contraceptive pill) which prevents ovulation, if you do not plan to become pregnant.

Pain during the cycle: other possible causes

Pain during ovulation is benign and rarely disabling. On the other hand, you must be vigilant in the face of significant pain during the cycle.

If the pain is sharp, sudden, does not go away over hours and is not relieved by painkillers, it is better to consult a doctor urgently.

This could be a symptom of an ectopic pregnancy, torsion or rupture of an Ovarian Cyst ; gynecological complications requiring rapid treatment.

Severe pain during the cycle can also be a sign of endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Talk to your doctor.
