Simone Biles was a beacon of red, white and blue, glistening across the mat at full speed in her crystallized leotard. She became the first American woman in history to win two Olympic all-around gymnastics titles, claiming her second on Thursday in Paris.
Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade won a silver medal in the event, which includes vault, balance beam, uneven bars and floor exercise. American Suni Lee, who won the all-around title at Tokyo 2020, took bronze.
Biles’ victory is the sixth straight for an American woman in the event, a streak that dates back to 2004.
She also became the first American gymnast to win six gold medals and the third woman to win two all-around titles, after Larisa Latynina (Soviet Union) and Vera Caslavska (Czechoslovakia).
Biles captured her second all-around crown in her favorite event, the floor exercise, with a total score of 15.066 and wowed fans as she finished the competition Thursday at Bercy Arena.
The American led after the first rotation with a 15.766 on vault, just ahead of Andrade’s 15.100.
With Wednesday’s medal, Biles now has two gold medals in Paris.
She can potentially add to her medal collection (nine) until the end of the Olympic competition. The women’s vault final will be held on Saturday in Paris. The uneven bars final will be held on Sunday at Bercy Arena.
The balance beam and floor exercise finals will take place on Monday, the final day of Olympic gymnastics competition.
