Acting Minister of the Interior and Local Authorities Garry Conille announced urgent measures to improve production and delivery to the passport unit at the Haitian Embassy in Washington.

Following an inspection visit to the Haitian Embassy in Washington on Monday, July 1, 2024, Prime Minister Garry Conille and Acting Minister of the Interior announced to journalists that urgent measures will be taken to resolve the problem of production and delivery of passports to the production unit in order to alleviate the ordeal of thousands of compatriots in the diaspora who continue to denounce the authorities.

On an official trip to the United States from June 28 to July 4, before meeting with several dozen compatriots from the diaspora at the Haitian Embassy in Washington, Prime Minister and Acting Minister of the Interior Garry Conille led a working session with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dominique Dupuy, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Kethleen Florestal, the Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister, Nesmy Manigat, the Ambassador of Haiti to the United States, Louis Harold Joseph and the Acting Director of Immigration, Engineer Jean Osselin Lambert to respond to the pressing demand of the millions of Haitians living abroad.

Minister Garry Conille said he has given formal instructions to Acting Director of Immigration Jean Osselin Lambert to prepare the files of new immigration employees to increase the human resources of the passport unit in Washington at the end of July 2024. For the moment, there are only 9 employees working in the passport unit. The Acting Minister announced an improvement in equipment and an increase of more than 50% of the resources of this unit to reach the normal capacity of production and delivery of passports in order to meet the demand of more than 50 diplomatic missions scattered around the world.


For his part, the acting director of immigration, Eng. LAMBERT, explains the different steps to the passport unit such as data entry, verification, printing, lamination, quality control and delivery to the respective consulates. Everything is done in Washington now with a reduced team of 9 employees, not to mention logistical problems. We left a pilot experiment in Paris to enter the data on site. After a technical evaluation, we will extend this experiment across the other consulates. This will allow the State to renegotiate its transport contract with the company. FedEx and reduce the delivery time of passports and provide a dignified service to Haitian citizens living abroad, he concluded.
