A new sanitation campaign was launched this week in downtown Port-au-Prince, aimed at cleaning up the streets. Images and videos circulating on social media show teams of men and women picking up accumulated trash, with trucks loaded with rubbish near the State University of Haiti Hospital, around the Champ de Mars area and in the lower neighborhoods of the city.
The streets of the city centre, mostly deserted due to the strong presence of criminal gangs, create a climate of fear and insecurity. However, despite these challenges, garbage collection operations have been carried out without major incidents so far.
This voluntary initiative, not confirmed as funded by public authorities, sends a message of hope and resilience to a population under constant threat of violence.
