Russian President Vladimir Putin was re-elected on Sunday for a fifth term with more than 87% of the vote, according to the first exit polls after three days of voting in the country.
With the closing at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday of polling stations in the Kaliningrad region, the westernmost region of the country, the three days of voting in the presidential elections in Russia ended, where the re-election of the current head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, was already widely expected. Voting took place from 08:00 to 20:00 local time, and given that Russia’s territory spans eleven time zones, the first polling stations, located in the far east of the country, closed at 09:00 GMT .
According to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), when the polling stations closed, citizen participation was 73.33%, approaching the historical record for presidential elections, which is 74.66% (1991), while still waiting the final data.
This time, Russian voters were able to vote in three ways: with the traditional ballot, electronically, whether from a terminal or remotely via the Internet. In total, 112 million voters were called to the polls for these presidential elections, the eighth in Russian history.
