Paul Kagame has been re-elected president of Rwanda with 99.15% of the vote, according to partial results announced by the electoral commission. This fourth term confirms once again his dominant position in Rwandan politics.
A landslide victory Kagame has consistently won more than 93 percent of the vote in his previous elections. This time, eight candidates initially applied, but only Frank Habineza and Philippe Mpayimana were selected to run against him. The other candidates, including the most vocal critics, were excluded for various reasons, including criminal convictions.
Participation enthousiaste In Kigali, voters gathered at dawn to cast their ballots. Barimukije Pheneas said she voted for Kagame because of his achievements in development and national unity. Sifa, a young voter, expressed pride in participating in the polls, even though Kagame’s victory seemed a foregone conclusion.
Victory speech After the provisional results were announced, Kagame thanked his supporters, stressing that the 99% score reflected the confidence the population had in him.
Perspectives futures Thanks to a 2015 constitutional reform, Kagame could remain in power until 2034, further consolidating his influence over the country. The final results of the election will be announced on July 27.
