The deputy delegate of the district of Saint-Marc, engineer Walter Montas, reports a protest movement orchestrated since last week by prisoners of the Civil Prison of Saint-Marc, who denounced the rationing of their food diet.
The partial report of the escape at the Saint-Marc Civil Prison states that 12 prisoners were killed by the PNH, and the archives department was set on fire, according to the government commissioner of the Saint-Marc jurisdiction, Me Venson François. At the time of the escape, the armed prisoners clashed with the police, underlines the interim executive agent, Myriam Fièvre.
Images that have gone viral on social media show prisoners being escorted back by police officers as flames rose into the sky over St. Mark’s after inmates set fire to the inside of cells.
The damage is considerable, notes the deputy delegate of the Saint-Marc district, engineer Walter Montas. Prison equipment was ransacked and important documents were destroyed by the inmates. Dissatisfied with the diet offered by the prison administration, the prisoners had initiated a protest movement inside the Civil Prison.
It is important to note that 540 prisoners, including hundreds of convicts, make up the prison population of the Civil Prison of Saint-Marc.
