Scientists call for global collaboration to control AI

Leading artificial intelligence (AI) experts from both the West and China gathered in Beijing to warn of the existential dangers associated with AI and called for global cooperation similar to that seen during the Cold War to control these risks.

The statement, supported by figures including Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, Stuart Russell and Andrew Yao, comes after an international dialogue on AI safety.

At the meeting, scientists defined “red lines” in AI development, highlighting sensitive areas such as the creation of biological weapons and cyberattacks. They warned that global collaboration was needed to avoid catastrophic risks to humanity comparable to those of the nuclear conflicts of the Cold War.

The Chinese government’s tacit support for this declaration, with the participation of official representatives during the dialogue, underlines the importance of this initiative. Signatories to the declaration, including Turing Prize winners and leading AI experts, emphasized the need for international coordination to manage the existential challenges posed by AI.

This new call to action comes as major companies and governments are stepping up efforts to develop and regulate AI.

It shows the pressing need for responsible AI governance to ensure the safety and well-being of humanity in a world increasingly dependent on this emerging technology.
